Hello! My name is Amy Afont and this is my fourth year with our school. I'm so excited to be a part of such a wonderful school! I attended SDSU where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies as well as my Multiple Subject teaching credential. I also attended National University where I earned a Special Education credential (Mild/Moderate). I've been teaching for over 20 years in both traditional schools and charter schools, with all types of families. I have been fortunate enough to teach in places such as Japan (with an SDSU exchange program) and Puerto Rico (with the Department of Defense). I’ve been supporting homeschooling families for the last ten years and I can’t imagine doing anything else! I have two beautiful children: Alyette (24 years old) and Alfredo (21 years old). In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, going out for sushi with my fiance, Jay, and taking my English Bulldog, Lexi, to the dog park.

I am an advocate for students, parents, and individualized education. I have been working in the Homeschool Charter World for 6 years as both a homeschool teacher and a math virtual high school teacher. Prior to that, my experience spans from working at UC Irvine on a variety of pre-college outreach programs, as a classroom math teacher and an adjunct math professor at local community colleges. I earned my undergraduate degree from UC Irvine and a Masters of Arts in Mathematics at CSU Fullerton. I am a mom of 4 amazing children who keep me busy when I am not helping my wonderful and dedicated homeschool families.

I attended California Baptist University where I earned her Bachelor Degree in Liberal Studies, a Master’s Degree in Education as well as a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science. I have been an educator for 14 years starting as an Elementary School teacher serving students in Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grades. I then moved to middle school teaching 6th grade and evolved into virtual education where I realized my interest in teaching Biological & Life Sciences. I have worked in both Public and Charter School settings and have experience with Special Needs students. I believe learning is an adventure and I enjoy each partnership I get the opportunity to make with each of my families. I love getting hands on and providing real world applications to learning using the eclectic elements around the house. I am truly organic and an “out of the box” type thinker that loves a challenge. When you join my class you find a home, a safe place to gain inspiration, guidance and support. I believe that the partnerships I form with families are the true catalyst to student success and thus thrives me.

After graduating from UCLA in 1995, I had the great pleasure of working for a video game development company. I left the gaming industry for my dream job of teaching in 2002 and started teaching in traditional elementary school as well as junior high math/algebra and language arts, then found my passion of being a Homeschool Teacher in 2010. I have a wonderful husband and two amazing kids (boy/girl twins born in 2008). We are an adventurous family and love to be outdoors camping, fishing, or just at a park for a picnic. I love working with so many wonderful families and supporting the unique creativity of homeschooling.

Hello Families, I am so happy to be part of the Mission Vista family. This is my fourth year as a homeschool teacher and I feel so fortunate to work for this amazing school! I was born and raised in Napa, CA. I attended Sacramento State University and earned my B.A. in Liberal Studies. I attended Chapman University for my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. I taught in brick and mortar schools for seven years. I moved to La Quinta five years ago. I was introduced to our school while I was taking a year off from the classroom to spend with my kids. I am married to my college sweetheart and we have four kids (ages: 16, 7, and 4 yr old twins). I believe that all children are unique and learn in different ways. There isn’t only one teaching style or curriculum that fits everyone’s needs. I love the homeschool world and am in awe of the hardworking parents who are putting their kids first and teaching them at home. I am completely non-judgmental and love to see the variety of approaches that homeschool families take to educating their children. I look forward to working with my families this year and learning more from them and about them.

Hi! As a child, I always knew deep down that I wanted to connect, empower, and develop academic and character in people. I considered many different paths such as counseling, guidance, and teaching in meeting that goal. In the end, as I reflected on my life experiences, challenges, and strengths, teaching was the best position where I could express those parts of who I am that always naturally find their way out. Here at MVA, as a homeschool teacher, I am committed to connecting my parents with excellent resources and relationships that can help inform their homeschool experience. I am also committed to empowering parents and students to look for opportunities and curriculum that are outside of the “traditional” approach to learning. Lastly, being in close relationships with parents gives me the chance to discuss the standards while also incorporating resources that teach our children about love, justice, hope, and equality! It’s amazing to see all of the awesome and innovative things parents and students are doing in our program! I grew up in the Inland Empire and was a part of the International Baccalaureate Program! I absolutely loved education and I was “that girl” who always had her hands in everything! I was a journalist for the school newspaper, a leader in the Associated Student Body (ASB), and a member of the Black Student Union (BSU). I graduated with honors and went on to UC Santa Barbara! I received my degree in sociology and a minor in applied psychology and education. Also very busy, I worked in the executive chancellor's office and coordinated events on campus. Here, I met my husband who was studying mathematics and music. We got married and attended Azusa Pacific for our teaching credentials. I have tutored for Sylvan Learning Center, worked as a mild/moderate and moderate/severe instructional aide, substitute taught in 3 different districts, and taught in elementary school for a few years before I had my son and came to work for Mission Vista Academy. It has truly been an adventure! I am looking forward to the next years ahead!

I am a proud mother to seven children that range in age from 7-19. In my years of raising them, I have had some in public schools, some in charter schools, some in independent studies programs, and all of them in homeschooling at various times and for various reasons. While homeschooling, I came to the conclusion that not only did I have a knack for teaching, it came naturally to me and I loved doing it. Wanting to spend as much time as possible with my own children and still bring home an income, I decided to get my teaching credential later in life. I graduated summa cum laude from California State University San Bernardino with a teaching credential in multiple subjects in 2019. My student teaching internship focussed on 4th grade and Kindergarten. Music is a big part of my family and I've found great joy in coming up with ways to incorporate it into the core subjects for my kiddos throughout the years. This is my second year as a teacher with Mission Vista Academy and I am excited to continue learning and growing alongside so many wonderful homeschooling families.

As of the year 2020, I have accumulated over 15 years of experience in the field of education. I started my teaching journey when I graduated from California Baptist University in 2001 with a B.A. in English and immediately jumped into the classroom at a local private school. Next, I received my teaching credential from Cal Poly Pomona and taught 10th and 12th grade Language Arts in the public school system. When I had children of my own, I took a short break from teaching, but eventually began working again part-time as a tutor and substitute teacher. Once my children were school-aged, I decided to try my hand at homeschooling and have done so for 7 years now. What a joy it has been educating my own three children, discovering which methods and practices work best for us! We have particularly enjoyed theme-studies and classical methods of education, including the Charlotte Mason method. We take every opportunity to learn about the cultural, historical and natural world around us, whether we are camping, off-roading or backpacking (we love the outdoors), or being purposeful at home with our classical curriculum and memory work, as well as our various interests such as picture, composer and nature studies! Now, I look forward to partnering with and supporting the amazing families here at Mission Vista Academy as they embrace their own journey and experience the incredible educational adventure of schooling from home.

Finding love for education at a very young age, I have always been inspired with that "ah ha" moment we all get when we figure out something for the first time. That look in the eyes... It motivates me to think outside the box in how we approach our daily learning activities and keeps me hungry to provide opportunities for that next moment. As a mother, I began our homeschooling journey with my own 3 kids in 2015 and have found that homeschooling allows for such a beautiful flexibility that ignites that moment over and over again. Homeschooling has become a passion that I am committed to prioritizing for as long as my kids allow. I hold a BS in Biology and MA in Educational Administration. I began my career in education in 2005 as a middle school science teacher; before I ever knew I'd be a homeschooling parent. I know that no single approach is the right one for every individual, and have been trained in a range of educational philosophies such as Charlotte Mason, Unschooling, and Classical. I love to stay active with my family by first and foremost finding magic in the little things, but also by traveling, attending field trips, road trips, painting, dancing, learning, spending hours and hours outside - hiking, swimming, playing, laying on a blanket in the grass, camping, kayaking and visiting with our guinea pigs, bunnies, and dogs - especially Bronco, on of our Australian Cattle Dogs. This is going to be a great year!

Hello! I am a homeschooling dad of 7 kids from 1st through 12th grade, each of them with unique personalities, skills, learning styles, challenges, interests and aspirations. There's never a dull-moment at my house between our love of board games and puzzles; the constant care of our cats, guineas pigs, bearded dragons, cichlids, and backyard chickens; and the Charlotte Mason inspired, somewhat eclectic, picture book heavy, interest-guided homeschooling approach designed by my amazing wife, who spends as much time at the local library as she does at home creating fun, new book lists and encouraging our kids to feel the same great joy we have in the creative AND technical side of learning, like diagramming this run-on sentence! :o We use every opportunity to surf and stand-up paddle board, rock climb, or get out for a weekend of camping in the quiet outdoors. Our family began where my teaching career did, in Santa Barbara, where I studied at the UC to receive my undergrad degrees in Psychology and Creative Studies in Literature, my CA teaching credential, and my Masters in Education, which focused on our need as a culture to impart on our children the ability to see from multiple perspectives. Having taught in the parochial schools straight out of my grad program, I switched to homeschooling full time when my wife's babywearing and natural parenting business began to grow, while at the same time continuing my own part time business building stained glass windows and designing small business websites and logos. In 2016, now in Murrieta, I made the leap into what I now consider to be the BEST teaching gig ever, facilitating not just my own family's homeschool experience, but that of all the others on my charter school roster. I love sharing the wealth of curriculum resources, vendor options, and educational styles that we have at our fingertips. I also never hesitate to share my other hobbies and interests every chance I get. Who wants to chat photography, square-foot gardening, or robotics?? Who wants to head out on a hike or get together for a ukulele jam? I'm all there!!

I loved homeschooling him 5th through 8th grade and value the customized curriculum and experiential learning opportunities.

The 20-21 school year will be my 28th year as an educator and my 13th as a home school teacher. I was born and raised in the Coachella Valley and attended college in Los Angeles, earning a degree in graphic design. My favorite part of working with home school families is supporting parents and students as they gain the confidence and expertise to successfully create an education plan that fits their learning styles. It has been an exciting journey and I'm so excited to begin the new school year!

I have always made it a focus to keep parents as involved in the intervention process as possible.

I still smile to think I was able to attend Emmaus Bible College for a year and graduate from The Master's College. My first job was at Acacia Middle School which brought me to Hemet. I worked here for 10 years and Helen Hunt Jackson for a year while starting to homeschool my own kids. Ten years later, I was hired as an HST and now I can say I have been in education for 24 years and homeschooled for the past 14 years. I call myself an experienced homeschooler, but I must admit that my parents have taught me a great deal in the past 4 1/2 years. Mine is a life of learning! I just celebrated my 21st anniversary to Robbie during COVID and am blessed with 4 children: two just graduated, a high schooler, and a middle schooler: one with an IEP and one is a nephew.

My name is Lauriann Ferguson and this year will be my 8th year working as a homeschool teacher. I knew that I was going to be a teacher from a very young age. I completed my bachelors degree and teaching credential and Chapman University in 1999 and began my career as a public school classroom teacher in Anaheim. Five years later, I decided to stay home with my children and came into the world of homeschooling. One day a week, I taught classes and tutored for children that were homeschooled. I loved the freedom and flexibility and decided to become a homeschool teacher ten years later when my kids were older. This has been my most favorite job. I love to develop a personal learning plan for each of my students. I am constantly learning about curriculum and resources and will do anything to help my students succeed. That is the best part about being a homeschool teacher. I am thankful for the one on one interaction I get to have with my students and their families. I have been married to my husband, David, for 21 years and have an 18 year old daughter in her first year of college, and a 15 year old and 12 year old son. My family is my greatest joy.

"I earned my teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton and taught 4th grade for 8 years in Riverside and Fullerton. I went on to receive my Masters Degree in Educational Technology from CSUF before leaving the classroom to enjoy growing our family. As I researched homeschooling, I became very interested and excited about all of the different philosophies of education and the opportunity to explore truth, goodness and beauty with my own children. Every year of our journey has been different and I can say every challenge has been worth it! I am so thankful for the opportunity for school choice parents are afforded through charter schools and am proud to be a part of this one. Along our journey, we joined our school and found their mission of empowering families and enriching student learning to be a perfect fit with my family's educational goals. Hi, my name is Susan Frank and I am excited for another fantastic year with Mission Vista Academy! I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development, with an emphasis in Children’s Services, from Cal State San Marcos. I also have a Multiple Subject teaching credential from Cal State Fullerton. I am currently working on a Master of Arts in Reading degree from Grand Canyon University. During my early college years, I lived in Russia for six months and taught children how to speak English. I also worked at Sea World for seven years in the Education Department, teaching children about the ocean. For the past seven years, I have taught grades ranging from Kindergarten to 5th Grade in public and charter school classrooms. I believe that children learn best when they feel safe and loved and when their learning is personalized. Homeschooling is a great way to personalize learning and make sure children are getting what they need to help them excel. Most of my spare time is happily spent with my family. My husband and I have seven children who keep us busy and bring us joy. I love being a mom and appreciate how teaching with Mission Vista Academy allows me to have a more flexible schedule and time with my children. I enjoy reading and spending time outdoors, especially hiking and being near or in the ocean. I have had a few opportunities to swim with different sea animals such as whale sharks, dolphins, sting rays, sea turtles, and manatees. I love to travel and I am always looking for and planning my next adventure. My dream is to someday swim with Humpback whales in Tonga. I love being a teacher and feel blessed to have this opportunity to work as a team with families along their homeschooling journey!

While my husband and I were stationed in Germany, I earned my Masters of Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught in Virginia, Korea, Missouri, Colorado, Florida, Germany, and California. I have taught in traditional public schools, DOD schools, Charter schools, and I have also home-schooled my own children. I love learning. Every time life gives me a new opportunity to learn, whether it is an autistic son or an extremely right-brained child that struggles in a left-brained school system, I take advantage of my ability to learn new ways of helping those close to me. I have four children. I just had three graduate from high school and one going into high school. I began homeschooling when my oldest three started first grade. I had a special needs son who blossomed in home-school and I also had an elite gymnast who needed a schedule that enabled him to train 24 hours per week. I am a huge advocate for having the choice to choose an individual path for each individual child. I am passionate about teaching to the child. Whether it was my own children or my classroom students, I wanted to teach for understanding and success. A huge part of that was learning about multiple intelligences, learning styles, social emotional needs or growth mindset attitudes that help students learn best and help them to be lifelong learners. I am very excited to help and support families and students on their education journey.

I obtained my certificate to teach preschool while in high school. I taught preschool for five years; while doing so, I discovered my love for teaching. I then decided to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher. I earned a BA in liberal studies from Cal State Long Beach and my teaching credential from the University of California, Irvine. After moving to the Corona area, I joined Sylvan Learning Center as an Assistant Director of Education. I treasured my time there because it allowed me the opportunity to provide individualized programs and lesson plans for each student, which, in turn, allowed those students to build self-confidence and make great strides academically. My intense desire to provide my own children with quality, individualized learning guided my decision to begin homeschooling. This will be our 8th year homeschooling and we absolutely love it! My children participate in hockey, swimming, theater, piano lessons, a homeschool PE group, and a variety of elective classes throughout the school year. I also volunteer as a troop leader for my daughter’s troop. As a family, we love to be outdoors exploring nature and seeking new adventures any chance we get. We also enjoy long board games, swimming, tending to our garden and chickens, and family movie nights. We have two dogs that provide lots of affection and comedy to this very busy household.

As a long time homeschool mom, I often found myself sharing ideas about homeschooling with other moms who were curious about my methods. Through Mission Vista Academy I am able to share my passion for homeschooling with even more people. Looking back, when I decided to major in Biology at Biola University in the mid-nineties, I had no idea that I would later transition into a short career as an elementary school teacher before embarking on a lengthy one as a homeschool mom. After leaving Biola, I enrolled in a master's degree and credentialing program at Azusa Pacific University. For the next three years I taught first and second graders and then put my career on hold for 14 years when my first son was born. Now seven kids later (soon to be eight), I am back to work combining my own education with my passion for homeschooling. In my spare time I enjoy living on a small hobby farm where we raise all kinds of farm animals.

After my tenure at Chico State I taught first grade in the Bay Area and then moved to Southern California to marry and start a career in Riverside County. Hi! After graduating high school, I attended UC Riverside for my undergrad and University of Phoenix where I earned my Teaching Credential. I spent 16 wonderful years at a private Montessori school teaching 5th through 8th graders History and Literature. I wholeheartedly believe in the Montessori method of teaching and have seen first hand its effectiveness in the lives of my former students. Working in a private school allowed the opportunity to build long-lasting community with my students and their parents. A great bond was formed and I am so happy to continue that with my homeschool families today. When I'm not working with my students, I spend time with my family, which includes 13 nephews and nieces who I absolutely adore! I travel as often as I can by car, train, or airplane. Whether it is to the local beach or a faraway place in Europe, my love for travel runs deep.

When I was teaching elementary school, many years ago, my brother and his wife began homeschooling their kids. I watched with curiosity the difference between the two educational choices. I saw my nieces thrive as they learned at their own pace and had plenty of time to pursue their passions. When my husband and I had triplets, we decided homeschooling was the path for us as well. I have been homeschooling now for ten years, and it has been a wonderful experience for my family. I love the freedom and unique experiences that this lifestyle has afforded us. California born, raised, and schooled. I had aspirations to be a veterinarian, then a doctor and finally settled on a teaching profession. I graduated with a MS in Biology from Cal Poly Pomona, a Single Subject credential in Biology from Cal State Fullerton and a MA in Science Education from Cal State San Bernardino. I taught middle school science for 10 years in Riverside, Norco and Eastvale from 2004 until 2014. In addition to teaching, I served on a curriculum committee, as head of the Science Department, yearbook coordinator, softball coach, and Master teacher for 3 different student teachers. I had great experiences, trainings, students, and fellow teachers and made wonderful memories. However, my confidence in public school education declined each year as a I saw the injustice of our tax dollars going mainly to teacher's salaries and pensions and to schools who received more money due to low socioeconomic populations as well as English learners. In Riverside I had tons of money each year to spend on science supplies but in Norco I had to beg parents to donate in order to teach science with a hands on approach. It and some other factors led me to resign from the school district. I enjoyed staying home with my children and eventually made an unexpected decision to homeschool. I LOVE it!! It is soooo difficult but it has been the best, most rewarding decision. We started out as a homeschool family through Inspire and the next year I became a HST. The knowledge I have gained in one year as a HST is more than many homeschool families learn after years of homeschooling. With this knowledge, I can select curriculum for my children to address their learning weaknesses and strengths. I have seen so much growth in their skills, knowledge and love of learning. This program has blessed us by providing funds to diversify my children's learning experience. It is my hope MVA and the charter school community will be around for a LONG time to give parents options and to support families who have taken the responsibility to school their children, a concept that has existed from the beginning of human existence.

I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in beautiful San Diego. I began teaching in the classroom in 2001 as a literacy support teacher and then quickly moved to my own classroom. I have taught in the classroom for 19 years. I spent a few years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade, but the majority of my classroom teaching time was spent teaching Kindergarten. I absolutely loved building relationships with the students, creating an enriched learning environment, and encouraging them in their efforts to learn. It was a gift! Last year was my first year with Mission Vista Academy. I have learned so much about the homeschooling world and look forward to all I have to learn this year. It is a special gift to get to school your own children. My husband and I have three wonderful children 16, 14, and 4 years of age. I am looking forward to the opportunity school them this year as well. I have always wanted to home school! I look forward to gaining a new perspective on education as I make this transition with my own family.

"I graduated with a teaching credential and BA from Loyola Marymount University. Then I transferred to CSU Long Beach where I earned an MA in Education and a Reading Specialist Credential. After graduating college, I had an amazing two-year adventure as a volunteer high school teacher on the island of Chuuk in Micronesia. Then I began my career as an elementary teacher in Pico Rivera before landing a job as a second-grade teacher for the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. I joined the exciting world of homeschooling when my own three children were in elementary school. What a privilege it has been working for several homeschool charter schools since 1998. Through this experience I have grown quite knowledgeable with the different educational philosophies and curriculum choices. I especially enjoy working closely with parents to create personalized learning plans that best meet their children’s educational goals. For the past twelve years I have specialized in helping high school students successfully meet the rigorous A-G requirements, so they are well-prepared for college or their career path. I enjoy sharing my passion for running and hiking the beautiful trails surrounding the Inland Valley, while social distancing of course! "

I've been in education for 14 years and previously taught 6th grade, 1st grade, Kindergarten and TK in the Menifee Union School District before making the amazing decision to join Mission Vista Academy. Hello! I graduated with my BS in Education many years ago (24 to be exact), and hold a multiple subject TK-12 teaching credential. I returned to teaching in 2018 when my children became more independent and a few flew the nest. I have experience in the classroom spending time as a general education teacher in Pre-K, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades in addition to being an advocate, tutor, and substitute. I feel versed in all things high school having had three of my own children graduate and having worked with several high school students with MVA over the last few years. Additionally, I homeschooled one of my daughters in middle school and loved the exploration, as it blew open a whole new way of learning and life experience. I believe in helping families find success educating the whole child... most mainstream schools don't focus on teaching to the child's best learning style. Learning should be an exciting adventure! I’m so grateful to have found that passion again with Mission Vista Academy! Outside of being a teacher, my six greatest loves call me mom (4 girls, 2 boys). They are 13, 15, 16, 20, 21, & 23. I’m seasoned with homeschooling and life in general! Living my best life outside of my professional career is a mixed bag of the great outdoors, traveling adventures, sailing, and I’m always up for an extreme adventure like sky diving, hang gliding, or a paddle down the lake. Interior design is another passion, and as a former professional seamstress, I use to own a design consulting business. I’m that mom who has a power tool in one hand, and some bling on the other! On the weekends you’ll find me traveling, enjoying a concert or a beach day with my family, or building and creating for my home. I'm an advocate for you and your child(ren), and will do my best to partner with you in this journey in the way that is the most helpful for your family's success. Together may we give your children the roots to grow, and the wings to fly!

I have had the pleasure of working in the field of education for over 30 years as a classroom teacher, preschool director, parenting coach, college professor (I currently teach in the Child Development and Education department at College of the Desert), and homeschool teacher. I’m a transplanted midwesterner from Michigan turned desert girl whose happy place is the coast, and I make my way to the ocean every chance I get! It is a great pleasure to work with families and students to ensure that children receive an optimal educational experience. I believe that every child should be afforded the opportunity to a learning experience in which they are valued, respected, and have the opportunity to grow to their potential. I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of families and children over the years and, besides being married to my best friend for 3 decades and mothering my own 3 amazing children and being “Mimi” to my 3 precious grandchildren, working as an educator is my greatest blessing.

I attended California State University Long Beach for my BA in Liberal Arts and then got my Teaching Credential through Cal State Teach. I recently obtained my Masters degree in Teaching and Learning from Brandman University. I knew I wanted to be a teacher from a young age. It didn't take long for me to figure out that I loved working with children - especially those with special needs. I attended California Baptist University and earned both my multiple subjects and mild/moderate special education credentials. Over the last nine years, I've worked with general and special education students in both a traditional school setting and for charter schools. I've worked with grades TK-12 with a wide variety of learning needs. What I love most about working with homeschooling families is finding the right strategies and activities to fit the learning style of each individual child. My husband and I have been married for seven years and we have two children. This year our four-year-old daughter announced that she is ready to start school and reminds us daily that it's time to do math or read. Let the homeschooling journey begin! I frequently find her trying to teach her little brother what she learned earlier that day. My other great love in life if gardening and I spend as much time as I can growing as much as I can.

I went on to earn my Teaching Credential at CSU San Marcos. While teaching in the classroom, I earned my MA at National University. I taught in the classroom for over a decade in the Murrieta Valley USD and loved it. I took time off to be a stay at home mom for a while, but returned to education with my job as an HST here at MVA in 2018. I have one son, whom I homeschool. He is in the 2nd grade. I have loved working with families and supporting them in their homeschooling experience. Although I work with families who have children of all ages, I work with a lot of families with young children. I love to encourage these young children with emphasizing a love of learning, curiosity, and learning through play and experiences. I look forward to this third year at MVA!

I am a graduate from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and a graduate from Western Governors University with a Master's degree in Mathematics Education. I completed my teacher credential program at California Baptist University. I'm a natural born teacher and I have been in education for over 20 years. I have taught just about every grade level in some capacity from TK-12th and I have worked as a Reading Specialist, helping younger students develop their reading, and helping older students correct reading difficulties. I also have a love for teaching Mathematics in all grade levels TK-12. I am not a ""Math Genius"", and because of that, I know how to think like a struggling student, target the difficulty, correct it and help a student (and parent) gain confidence in the area of Mathematics. I believe too many people think they are not good at Math, when everyone has the equal opportunity to be successful in it. They just need to be shown how. Teaching in the classroom setting was both challenging and fun but I often felt like I wish I could do more for the students, both the ones who just got it and the ones who were struggling and needed more time. I have found that homeschooling is a great option for both kinds of learners. I love working for Mission Vista Academy which enables me to come along side parents and discover how to best support each student and his or her individual needs.

My name is Brooke Thompson and I earned my teaching credential at Cal State San Bernardino in 1999. I have loved teaching children for 20 years. My focus for the last 15 years has been working with TK and Kindergarten, but have found passion for serving high school students as I have homeschooled my own children. I love helping children find their passions and helping them achieve their goals. My passions are my husband of 25 years and 5 children ranging in ages 23-6. When I’m not loving them or my homeschool families, you might find me listening to musicals, cooking in my kitchen or at the beach.

Hello! I am Mrs. Michelle Thompson and I am excited to be part of your family’s education team this year. This will be my 10th year teaching and my 4th year as a home school teacher with Mission Vista Academy. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Comparative Literature and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a subject matter authorization in English from San Diego State University. This means that I love to read and enjoy teaching reading and writing. I fully believe that one of the best skills we can teach our children is the ability to read confidently and for enjoyment. I hope I am able to help my own children and my wonderful students nurture a love of reading. Before teaching in the home school setting, I taught 3rd grade and kindergarten. During my years as a 3rd grade teacher, I taught at a classical charter school in Temecula. My time there helped me develop a deep appreciation for the classical approach to education as well as teaching American history thoroughly. During my years as a kindergarten teacher, I taught at a charter school for Russian speaking students in Sacramento. That placement helped me learn effective strategies teaching English Language Learners. It was a wonderful experience helping those sweet five and six year olds navigate living in a new country that I still cherish to this day. My husband and I have been married for 11 years and have 4 children: 3 energetic creative boys and one sweet baby girl. I home school my 7 and 5 year old with Mission Vista and my two younger children (3 years old and 1 year old) join in signing songs and making messes. I also volunteer as the leader of our children’s Sunday school organization at our church. My hobbies include reading, crafts, home improvement, and sneaking a rare nap. My family and I hope you have a wonderful experience with Mission Vista Academy. We are all on this adventure together.

Creating an educational plan that works best for my students is a top priority for me. I have twin boys who are 16 years old and love sports. My husband and I enjoy watching my sons play soccer and basketball. We spend lots of time as a family being active. I am really excited about this school year! I'm Tana Van Malsen. I'm very excited to be starting my second year with Mission Vista! I graduated from the University of Mary in North Dakota with an Elementary Education degree. Shortly after I graduated, I moved to the desert to finish my student teaching. I then began my teaching career in 4th grade. I taught 4th grade for 12 years and then spent a year teaching in a Math intervention and enrichment program. After many years in the classroom, I wanted to try something different, so I made the transition to the homeschool realm and I'm so happy I did! I enjoy the close working relationship I get to have with my families and I love encouraging them on their educational journey. My husband and I stay very busy with our daughters, Rachel (9) and Natalie (7). We love to go to the beach, we love to camp, snow ski, and spend time together. I'm looking forward to another great year!

My name is Connie Villasenor. I graduated from San Diego State University. I was a high school English teacher for 7 years. During that time I took a leave of absence and moved to Europe where I spent a year as a guest teacher at a public school in Germany, and also taught Business English courses to adults. I left public school teaching just before the birth of my first child. My husband and I decided to homeschool our own children which started me off on a new exciting adventure! While homeschooling, I have taught in various co-ops, been a private tutor, and I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center and 2 charter schools. I am aware and familiar with all types of curriculum and learning styles. My family and I are now beginning our 10th year of homeschooling and I can honestly say after all of my varied teaching experiences throughout the years, that homeschooling your child(ren) is the absolute best gift you can give them. I believe in personalized education. In 2019 I was a Finalist for the Crystal Apple Award. In the 2019-2020 school year I served as an Induction Coach to new teachers. I am very passionate about homeschooling and I am excited to help families on their homeschooling journey.

An inspiring Biology teacher with the heart of a life-long learner, motivated me to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a teaching degree. After a detour in the business world and an Economics degree instead, I returned to education when my own children started school. The journey led to ten years as a K-8 substitute, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, five years of teaching Middle School Independent Study, and 11 years in K-8 Charter School Education. As part of the Mission Vista Academy Team, it is a privilege to work with families to encourage, support, challenge, and motivate the next generation of life-long learners.

My name is Brenda Willis and I am excited to be joining the Mission Vista Academy Team this year! I earned a BA in Liberal Studies and a teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach. I’ve worked in education my entire adult life including working as a substitute teacher, a tutor, a preschool teacher and finally a TK teacher. During my time as a TK teacher, I worked closely with the school district to enhance the TK curriculum. This gave me the opportunity to find various ways to meet the diverse needs of my students so they could reach their full potential. Although most of my teaching experience is with little ones, I have had the opportunity to work with children aged 3-18 at youth group. I also have 3 children of my own (Chelsey-11, Courtney-8, and Dixon 6 months). I can’t wait for a fantastic school year!
